There is a misconception about historical romance that persists in the book world at large. They are pejoratively called “bodice rippers,” a term that is a throwback to the 1970s, when the heroines were innocent, powerless creatures and the heroes were worldly, experienced alpha males who knew best.
For fun, try Janet Evanovich's Plum series. The heroine eats many, many donuts. Romance actually takes a back seat to the donuts :) A Lady's Pleasure has heroine that's called "whey-faced". Like storee said the heroine becomes beautiful in the heroes eyes in most of the "plain-faced" heroine books I've read.
